Their Story

Raymon Lee Allen Johnson was a 22-year-old from Midland, Georgia. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On October 13, 2010, Johnson was killed by hostile action while conducting operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense casualty announcement did not specify the exact nature of the incident, but his death was part of a surge of U.S. forces into the volatile southern province that year.

Johnson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, Helmand province was a central battleground, with Marines engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban forces in districts like Marjah and Sangin.

Following his death, Johnson's body was returned to Georgia. He was buried with military honors. His name is inscribed on the Memorial Wall at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Park in Columbus, Georgia.

Lance Corporal Johnson is remembered by his community and fellow Marines. His sacrifice is documented in the official records of U.S. military casualties from the Afghanistan war.
