U.S. Army Sergeant Joseph Dennis Johnson, 24, of Flint, Michigan, died on June 16, 2010, in northern Kunduz province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Joseph Dennis Johnson was a sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to the 161st Engineer Support Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was 24 years old and a native of Flint, Michigan. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On June 16, 2010, Sergeant Johnson was killed in a hostile incident in the northern part of Afghanistan's Kunduz province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in separate hostile events in Afghanistan that day.
Johnson died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge and intense fighting, particularly in the country's eastern and southern regions. Kunduz, in the north, was an area of increasing insurgent activity at the time.
Following his death, Sergeant Johnson's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His funeral was held in Michigan.
Sergeant Johnson is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and on the 20th Engineer Brigade memorial at Fort Bragg. His name is included on the Michigan Remembers memorial in Lansing, which honors state residents who died in post-9/11 conflicts.
