Jeffrey Warren Johnson was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. His unit was based out of Camp Pendleton, California. He was from Tomball, Texas.
On May 11, 2010, Corporal Johnson was killed during a patrol in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) blast while conducting combat operations.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, Helmand province was a focal point of intense fighting between coalition forces and Taliban insurgents, with IEDs being a primary cause of casualties.
His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. The Marine Corps notified his family, and his body was returned to the United States. Local media in Texas reported on his death and funeral services.
Corporal Johnson's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol and is listed on the online memorials maintained by the Marine Corps and the Department of Defense. He is remembered by his community in Tomball.
