Isaac Lee Johnson Jr. was a 24-year-old soldier from Columbus, Georgia. He served as a Specialist in the Georgia Army National Guard, assigned to Company A, 48th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, based in Statesboro. According to military records, his unit had previously deployed to locations including the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before its assignment to Afghanistan.
On July 6, 2009, Johnson was killed in the Khanabad district of Afghanistan's Kunduz province. The U.S. Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from hostile enemy fire. A contemporaneous report from the Associated Press indicated the incident occurred during a patrol.
Johnson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
