U.S. Army First Lieutenant David Andrew Johnson, 24, of Horicon, Wisconsin, died on January 25, 2012, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, while serving with Company C, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment.

Their Story

David Andrew Johnson was a 24-year-old first lieutenant from Horicon, Wisconsin. He served with Company C, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. His military service reportedly included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On January 25, 2012, Johnson was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the Dand district of Kandahar province, according to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports. He was part of a unit operating in a volatile agricultural region south of Kandahar city, a longtime insurgent stronghold.

Johnson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2012, the conflict was in its final years, with U.S. forces engaged in a surge of operations in the Taliban's southern heartland before a planned drawdown.

Following his death, Johnson was posthumously promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. He was survived by his parents and a sister. A memorial service was held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and he was buried in his hometown of Horicon, Wisconsin.

Johnson is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and on online veteran memorial platforms. His name is inscribed on Panel 2W, Line 127 of the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial at the Highground in Neillsville.
