Their Story
Senior Airman Daniel James Johnson was a 23-year-old airman from Schiller Park, Illinois. He served with the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron, based at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Civil engineer squadrons are responsible for construction, utilities, and emergency services on military installations.
On October 5, 2010, Johnson was killed near the village of Hendu Kalachen in the Arghandab District of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident. The Department of Defense stated he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on combating al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power. By 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant U.S. troop surge and intense fighting in southern provinces like Kandahar.
Johnson's death was reported by the Department of Defense on October 7, 2010. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that week. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
Johnson is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His name is included in the tally of more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
