Their Story
Allen Cornelius Johnson was a 31-year-old U.S. Army Special Forces soldier from Los Molinos, California. He served as a Sergeant First Class with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 7th Special Forces Group was heavily deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On April 26, 2005, Johnson was killed during a combat operation in the vicinity of Cobra, a forward operating base located in the volatile Paktika Province of eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. Specific details of the engagement were not widely released, consistent with the nature of special operations missions.
Johnson's death occurred during a period of intense counter-insurgency operations in Afghanistan. By 2005, the initial invasion phase of Operation Enduring Freedom had transitioned into a protracted conflict against a resurgent Taliban and other militant groups. U.S. and coalition forces conducted frequent raids and patrols in the mountainous eastern provinces bordering Pakistan.
Johnson's death was officially recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on Panel 9E, Line 124 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Bragg.
Sergeant First Class Johnson is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated Special Forces soldier. His service, and that of the 7th Special Forces Group, is documented in the history of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan during the early years of the post-9/11 campaign.
