Their Story
Joshua Lynn Jetton was a 21-year-old soldier from Sebring, Florida. He served as a Private First Class with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The unit, part of the 25th Infantry Division, deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Jetton died on June 20, 2011, in Marawarah District, Kunar Province, Afghanistan. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. Media reports from the time indicate his unit was engaged in combat operations in the volatile eastern region near the Pakistan border.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, marked by a surge of U.S. troops aimed at countering insurgent forces. The rugged terrain of Kunar Province was a frequent site of engagements between coalition forces and Taliban and other militant fighters.
