Jeschke, Ryan

Ryan Jeschke was a 31-year-old native of Herndon, Virginia, who served as a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, based at Camp Pendleton, California.

On August 10, 2012, Jeschke was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. The area was a focal point for Taliban activity and a key battleground for international forces.

Jeschke's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a significant U.S. and NATO troop presence concentrated in provinces like Helmand to counter insurgent forces and train Afghan security units.

The Department of Defense publicly announced his death on August 13, 2012. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with full military honors. His death was reported by several national news outlets at the time.

Gunnery Sergeant Jeschke is remembered on memorial walls and by veteran organizations. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and is included in the online registry of the Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) fallen.
