On August 10, 2012, Jeschke was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. The area was a focal point for Taliban activity and a key battleground for international forces.

Jeschke's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
