Their Story
Major Kevin Michael Jenrette was a 37-year-old officer from Lula, Georgia, serving with the Georgia Army National Guard's HHT, 1-108th Cavalry Regiment. According to his unit's history, his military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa prior to his final assignment.
On June 4, 2009, Jenrette was killed in Kakar, a village in Afghanistan's Helmand province. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile enemy action. A contemporaneous report from the *Stars and Stripes* newspaper noted the area was a known Taliban stronghold, and his death occurred during a period of intense fighting as U.S. Marines launched a major offensive in the region.
Jenrette's death came during the middle years of Operation Enduring Freedom, a period marked by a resurgent Taliban and escalating violence. U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan increased significantly in 2009, and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks reached record numbers. Combat in rural districts like those in Helmand province was frequent and intense.
Following his death, Jenrette was posthumously promoted from Captain to the rank of Major. He was survived by his wife and children. His name is recorded on the Defense Casualty Analysis System and on memorials honoring Georgia's fallen service members.
A public memorial service was held in his hometown of Lula. In 2010, a dedication ceremony was held for a bridge on Georgia State Route 52 named in his honor, according to local news coverage at the time.
