Their Story

Gerald Robert Jenkins was a 19-year-old from Circleville, Ohio. He served as an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On October 20, 2010, Specialist Jenkins was killed by enemy small-arms fire in Maquan, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province. He was part of a unit engaged in operations in the region at the time.

Jenkins died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was marked by a major coalition offensive in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold, where intense fighting was common.
