U.S. Army Specialist Joseph Allen Jeffries, 21, of Beaverton, Oregon, was killed in a hostile incident in Qalat, Afghanistan, on May 29, 2004, while serving with the 320th Psychological Operations Company.
Their Story
Joseph Allen Jeffries was a 21-year-old from Beaverton, Oregon, who served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was assigned to the Portland-based 320th Psychological Operations Company, a unit specializing in information operations and influence activities.
On May 29, 2004, Jeffries was killed in Qalat, the capital of Afghanistan's Zabul province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) while he was on patrol. He was one of two soldiers killed in the blast.
Jeffries died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2004, the conflict had entered a phase of intensified counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda remnants, particularly in the country's southern and eastern provinces like Zabul.
His death was reported by local and national news outlets, including The Oregonian. The Army posthumously awarded Jeffries the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his parents and a sister.
Jeffries is memorialized on the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial and is listed among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. His unit, the 320th Psychological Operations Company, continued its mission in Afghanistan for years after his death.
