Their Story

William Haywood Jefferson Jr. was a Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force. A combat controller, he was assigned to the 21st Special Tactics Squadron based at Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina. His role involved directing close air support and coordinating airpower for ground forces, a position requiring extensive training and deployment to conflict zones including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On March 22, 2008, Jefferson was killed during combat operations in the village of Sperwan Ghar, located in the Panjwayi District of Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with Taliban insurgents. He died from wounds sustained in the engagement.

Jefferson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2008, the conflict was characterized by a resurgent Taliban and intense fighting in southern provinces like Kandahar, where NATO and Afghan forces conducted frequent counterinsurgency operations.

The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and the Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Jefferson is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Air Force Special Operations Command headquarters and on online veterans' memorials. His squadron continues the mission for which he was trained, integrating air and ground special operations forces.
