Their Story
Javier, Conrado Diaz Jr was a 19-year-old from Marina, a coastal city in Monterey County, California. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to Troop I, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, a Stryker brigade combat team based in Camp Vilseck, Germany.
On December 19, 2010, Diaz was killed in Lwan Sohbat, a village in the volatile Helmand Province of southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of hostile action. Specific details of the engagement were not publicly released by the military.
Diaz died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred during a period of intense fighting following a major troop surge ordered by President Barack Obama in late 2009. The 2nd Cavalry Regiment was deployed to Helmand Province, a Taliban stronghold and center of the opium trade, where clearing operations were frequent.
The Pentagon officially announced his death on December 21, 2010. He was survived by his mother, father, and siblings. A memorial service was reportedly held in Marina.
Diaz is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Marina Veterans Memorial Park. His name is also inscribed on Panel 3W, Row 111 of the California Veterans Memorial in Sacramento.
