Their Story
Dennis James Jr. was a 21-year-old from Deltona, Florida, who enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Specialist with Company E, 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Polk, Louisiana.
On August 31, 2011, James was killed by indirect fire at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. The base, a major logistics hub for U.S. and coalition forces in eastern Afghanistan, was a frequent target of insurgent rocket and mortar attacks.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on counter-insurgency and training Afghan security forces.
The Department of Defense officially announced his death on September 2, 2011. He was one of 72 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during the month of August that year.
James was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Deltona, Florida.
