U.S. Army Sergeant Kip Allen Jacoby, 21, of Pompano Beach, Florida, was killed on June 28, 2005, in Asadabad, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Their Story

Kip Allen Jacoby was a 21-year-old sergeant from Pompano Beach, Florida. He served with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. The 160th SOAR, known as the "Night Stalkers," provides helicopter aviation support for special operations forces.

On June 28, 2005, Sergeant Jacoby was part of the crew of a U.S. Army MH-47D Chinook helicopter on a mission in eastern Afghanistan. The aircraft was shot down by enemy fire in the mountainous terrain near Asadabad in Kunar Province. All eight U.S. service members and eight Navy SEALs on board were killed. The incident occurred during a mission to insert a special operations team.

The crash took place during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2005, operations were focused on counter-insurgency missions along the Pakistan border. The area around Asadabad was a known stronghold for insurgent groups.

The Department of Defense announced the casualties on June 29, 2005. Sergeant Jacoby was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal, among other decorations. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.

Sergeant Jacoby is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Hunter Army Airfield and is listed on the 160th SOAR's memorial wall. He was one of 2,356 American service members killed during Operation Enduring Freedom.
