Their Story
Kedith Lamont Jacobs Jr. was a 21-year-old soldier from Denver, Colorado. He served as a Specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bliss, Texas.
On May 27, 2012, Jacobs was killed in Chak-e Wardak District, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile. According to reports, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
Jacobs's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The war was characterized by counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other militant forces, with Wardak Province being a significant area of conflict.
Jacobs was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in separate IED attacks in Afghanistan on that date. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado State Capitol.
