Their Story
Timothy Matthew Jackson was a 22-year-old from Corbin, Kentucky. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The unit was part of Regimental Combat Team 1, deployed to Afghanistan under the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).
On September 30, 2010, Jackson died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed by hostile action. Specific details of the engagement were not released in initial reports.
Jackson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, Helmand province was a focal point of intense fighting between coalition forces and Taliban insurgents, particularly around the agricultural districts along the Helmand River valley.
His body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Corbin. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart medal.
