Their Story
Joe Michael Jackson was a 22-year-old from White Swan, Washington. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). The battalion was based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
Jackson died on April 24, 2011, at Camp Bastion, a major British-run airbase in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident. No further operational details of the event were publicly released by military authorities at the time.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with international forces heavily engaged in Helmand Province, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production. The 1st Battalion, 5th Marines was deployed to the region as part of a surge of U.S. forces.
Jackson was one of two U.S. service members reported killed in Afghanistan on that date. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. Public records and memorial pages list his final resting place as the Reservation Community Memorial Park in White Swan, Washington.
He is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, Washington, and on online veterans memorials. His name is included on the roster of more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
