Their Story
Francisco Rafael Jackson was a 24-year-old from Elizabeth, New Jersey. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, a unit based at Camp Pendleton, California, and deployed as part of Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward.
Jackson died on October 19, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed his death as the result of hostile action, though the specific incident was not detailed in initial releases. His unit was operating in southern Afghanistan, a region of intense insurgent activity.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a surge of U.S. forces was ordered, with a significant focus on securing Taliban strongholds in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. Jackson's battalion was part of that increased presence.
Jackson was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Lance Corporal. His awards reportedly included the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. A memorial service was held at Camp Pendleton.
He is remembered on the 'Wall of Faces' online memorial maintained by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund for those who died in Afghanistan and Iraq. His name is also inscribed on a memorial in his hometown of Elizabeth.
