Aaron Dale Istre was a 37-year-old captain in the United States Army from Vinton, Louisiana. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), based at Fort Hood, Texas. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Captain Istre was killed in action on March 24, 2012, in Bagram, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. Bagram Airfield, a major coalition base north of Kabul, was a frequent target for insurgent attacks.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the U.S. was in the process of drawing down a surge of forces, transferring security responsibilities to Afghan National Security Forces while facing a resilient Taliban insurgency.
Captain Istre's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including The Advocate in his home state of Louisiana. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and children.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by the 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. His name is inscribed on the Louisiana Veterans Memorial in Baton Rouge.
