Ismail Haniyeh was the Chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau and former Palestinian Prime Minister. He was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, on July 31, 2024.

Their Story

Ismail Abdel Salam Ahmed Haniyeh was born in 1963 in the Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. A founding member of Hamas in 1987, he rose to become a senior political figure. Following Hamas's victory in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, Haniyeh served as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority from March 2006 until June 2007, when Hamas took control of Gaza after a conflict with Fatah.

On July 31, 2024, Haniyeh was killed in Tehran, Iran. According to Iranian state media, an explosive device was planted in a guesthouse belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the city's north. The device detonated, killing Haniyeh and several others. He was 61 years old.

His assassination occurred during a period of heightened regional tensions and direct military exchanges between Israel and Iran in 2024. These exchanges included strikes on military and diplomatic targets. Haniyeh was in Tehran for meetings with senior Iranian officials at the time of his death.

Iranian authorities blamed Israel for the attack, a charge Israeli officials neither confirmed nor denied. Hamas confirmed Haniyeh's death and declared a period of mourning. Condolences were issued by Iranian leadership and other regional groups aligned with Hamas.

Haniyeh's death removed a key figure who had led Hamas's political bureau since 2017 and was a central negotiator in ceasefire talks. He was viewed as a pragmatist within the movement's leadership. His assassination was seen as a significant escalation in the shadow conflict between Israel and Iran.
