Brandon Taylor Islip was a 23-year-old soldier from Richmond, Virginia. He served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army's HHC, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On November 29, 2009, Sergeant Islip was killed during combat operations in the Bala Murghab district of Afghanistan's Badghis Province. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. The area was a known insurgent stronghold in northwestern Afghanistan.
Islip's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, with a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and a focus on clearing Taliban-held territories. The Taliban had regrouped and was employing improvised explosive devices and direct attacks at increasing rates.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense in early December 2009. He was survived by his family in Virginia. Media reports from the time noted his unit, the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was engaged in difficult combat in the remote and rugged Bala Murghab valley.
