U.S. Army Sergeant Nathaneil George Irish, 23, of Billings, Montana, was killed in action on October 28, 2019, at Camp Taji, Iraq.
Their Story
Sergeant Nathaneil George Irish was a 23-year-old soldier from Billings, Montana. He served with Company B, 25th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He deployed to Iraq and Syria as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.
On October 28, 2019, Sergeant Irish died from wounds sustained in a non-combat related incident at Camp Taji, a large coalition base north of Baghdad. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day. The specific details of the incident were not publicly disclosed by the military.
Irish was killed during Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition mission against the Islamic State group. By late 2019, the group had lost its territorial caliphate, and the coalition's role had largely shifted to training, advising, and assisting Iraqi security forces. The mission continued despite the declared territorial defeat.
Following his death, the Army's Criminal Investigation Command opened an inquiry. His body was returned to the United States. His hometown newspaper, The Billings Gazette, reported on the community's reaction and the loss felt by his family and fellow soldiers.
Sergeant Irish was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Sergeant. He is buried in Billings, Montana. His name is recorded on memorials honoring those who died during Operation Inherent Resolve.
