U.S. Army Sergeant Michael Keith Ingram Jr., 23, of Monroe, Michigan, died on April 17, 2010, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team.
Their Story
Michael Keith Ingram Jr. was a 23-year-old soldier from Monroe, Michigan. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
On April 17, 2010, Sergeant Ingram was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on patrol in the Arghandab River Valley of Kandahar province, according to U.S. military reports. He was part of a unit conducting counterinsurgency operations in a region considered a Taliban stronghold.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, a major troop surge was underway, with a focus on securing Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban insurgency. Intense fighting was common in the rural districts surrounding the provincial capital.
Sergeant Ingram's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His funeral was held in his hometown of Monroe, Michigan.
His name is inscribed on the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial. He is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier. His death was one of more than 1,800 U.S. service member fatalities recorded in Afghanistan in 2010, the deadliest year of the war for American forces.
