Staff Sergeant Matthew Nevin Ingham, 25, of Altoona, Pennsylvania, was a U.S. Marine serving with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion. He died on January 11, 2010, in Now Zad, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Matthew Nevin Ingham was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, based in Okinawa, Japan. The battalion was part of Regimental Combat Team 7, deployed as part of Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan.
On January 11, 2010, Staff Sergeant Ingham was killed by an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations in the Now Zad district of Afghanistan's Helmand province. He was 25 years old. The district was a known Taliban stronghold and a focus of intense counterinsurgency efforts by U.S. and allied forces.
Ingham's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Now Zad district was a strategically significant and heavily contested area, with Marines engaged in clearing operations to disrupt insurgent networks. The period of his death coincided with a major troop surge ordered by President Barack Obama.
According to the Department of Defense casualty announcement, Ingham was posthumously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.
