Their Story
Staff Sgt. James Roger V Ide was a 32-year-old soldier from Festus, Missouri. He served with the 230th Military Police Company, 95th Military Police Battalion, part of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command based in Sembach, Germany.
On August 29, 2010, Ide was killed in the village of Hyderabad, located in Afghanistan's Kandahar province. According to U.S. military reports, he died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident. The Department of Defense stated he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar, where international forces faced sustained opposition.
Following his death, Ide's body was returned to the United States. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was reportedly held in his hometown of Festus.
Ide was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Jefferson County Veterans Memorial Park in Missouri.
