Their Story
Vincent Sebastian Ibarria was a 21-year-old soldier from San Antonio, Texas. He served with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Specialist Ibarria died on July 3, 2020, in Farah Province, Afghanistan. The official casualty report stated he was killed by enemy small arms fire while engaged in a dismounted operation.
Ibarria's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S.-led NATO mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in January 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism operations.
The Army released a statement confirming his death. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. His awards include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal.
He is remembered by his unit and family. A memorial service was held at Fort Drum.
