Their Story
Josue Ibarra was a Private First Class in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. He was a native of Midland, Texas.
On June 19, 2011, Ibarra was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was 21 years old.
Ibarra's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on provinces like Helmand, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in regional and national news outlets. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan on that date, according to casualty reports.
Ibarra is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His name appears on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
