Corporal Andrew Lewis Hutchins, 20, of New Portland, Maine, was a U.S. Army soldier assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He died on November 8, 2010, at Combat Outpost Sabari in Afghanistan's Khost province.

Their Story

Andrew Lewis Hutchins was born in New Portland, Maine, a small town in the western part of the state. He joined the U.S. Army and was assigned as a Corporal to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in early 2010.

On November 8, 2010, Hutchins was killed by enemy small arms fire while his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol near Combat Outpost Sabari in the volatile Khost province, located in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.

Hutchins's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Regional Command-East, where U.S. and Afghan forces conducted frequent counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and Haqqani network fighters. The Khost province was a significant transit and staging area for insurgent forces, making it a focal point for coalition operations.

Following his death, Hutchins's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was reportedly held at Fort Campbell, and he was buried in his home state of Maine. The governor of Maine ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor.

Corporal Hutchins was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is remembered on memorials in Maine and at Fort Campbell. His name is inscribed on Panel 3R, Row 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
