Their Story
Matthew David Huston was a 24-year-old soldier from Athens, Georgia. He served as an Active Duty Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, which was attached to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 321st Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Huston died on March 1, 2010, in the district of Bala Murghab in Afghanistan's Badghis Province. The official cause was listed as hostile fire. Media reports from the time indicate the area was a known insurgent stronghold where U.S. and Afghan forces conducted frequent operations.
Huston's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was part of a significant troop surge ordered in late 2009, which saw intensified combat in remote regions like Badghis Province as part of counterinsurgency efforts.
Following his death, the Department of Defense formally announced his casualty. His hometown newspaper, the Athens Banner-Herald, reported on his passing and noted he was a graduate of Cedar Shoals High School.
Huston is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His name is included on the 82nd Airborne Division's memorial rolls.
