Lance Cpl. Dakota Ray Huse, 19, of Greenwood, Louisiana, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on November 9, 2010.
Their Story
Dakota Ray Huse was a 19-year-old from Greenwood, Louisiana. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a lance corporal to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On November 9, 2010, Huse was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was the only U.S. service member reported killed in Afghanistan on that date.
Huse's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, Helmand province was a major center of the conflict, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.
His body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church in Greenwood, according to local news reports. He was buried with military honors at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Keithville.
Huse was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the 'Faces of the Fallen' page maintained by The Washington Post and on the online 'Fallen Heroes' project.
