Their Story

Master Sergeant David Lee Hurt was a 36-year-old U.S. Army Special Forces soldier assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A native of Tucson, Arizona, Hurt had served in multiple theaters during his career, including deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On February 20, 2009, Hurt was killed by hostile fire in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he died from wounds sustained during combat operations.

Hurt's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2009, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar, a traditional Taliban stronghold.

Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced his casualty on February 23, 2009. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.

Master Sergeant Hurt is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the 3rd Special Forces Group compound and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 33W, Line 64 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum.
