Their Story
Terry John Hurne was a Specialist in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company B, 710th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. He was 34 years old and from Merced, California.
On June 9, 2014, Hurne died at Forward Operating Base Shank in the Pul-e-Alam district of Afghanistan's Logar province. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire. The base was a major logistics hub for U.S. and coalition forces in eastern Afghanistan.
Hurne's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The mission involved counter-insurgency operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces. By 2014, U.S. forces were in a period of drawdown, transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan National Security Forces.
His death was reported by the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. He was one of at least 2,349 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, according to official casualty records.
