Their Story
Travis Kent Hunsberger was born in Goshen, Indiana, and enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Staff Sergeant assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Hunsberger died on June 27, 2008, in Tarin Kwot, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces. The incident occurred in the Uruzgan province, a region of significant insurgent activity at the time.

The Department of Defense announced his death on June 30, 2008. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States.
Staff Sergeant Hunsberger is memorialized on the 7th Special Forces Group memorial at Fort Bragg and on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the U.S. government. His name is listed on the Global War on Terrorism memorial in his hometown of Goshen, Indiana.
