Their Story
John Patrick Huling grew up in West Chester, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Pendleton, California. He was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On May 6, 2012, Sergeant Huling was killed during a patrol in the volatile Sangin district of Helmand province. According to U.S. military reports, he was shot by small arms fire during a confrontation with insurgent forces. He was 25 years old.
Huling's death occurred during the later years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand, where Taliban forces remained active. U.S. and allied troops were engaged in a strategy of clearing areas and training Afghan security forces.
Following his death, Huling's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. A memorial service was held in Ohio, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow Marines. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse.
Sergeant Huling is survived by his parents and siblings. In 2013, a bridge in his hometown of West Chester was dedicated in his memory. His unit, the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, continued its mission in Afghanistan until the conclusion of the U.S. combat role in 2014.
