Their Story

Sergeant First Class Bradley Scott Hughes was a 41-year-old soldier from Newark, Ohio. He was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 528th Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 528th Sustainment Brigade provided critical logistical support for combat operations.

On April 24, 2011, Hughes died at Camp Brown, a forward operating base in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced he was killed in action. According to subsequent reports, his death resulted from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

The operation began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks and involved coalition forces combating Taliban insurgents and al-Qaeda. The Department of Defense formally notified his family of his death. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
