Maung Phyothu Htaik was a 20-year-old U.S. Marine from Hagerstown, Maryland. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Htaik died on January 1, 2011, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The official cause was listed as hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were released in initial announcements.

Htaik's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010 and early 2011, Helmand province was a primary battleground, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.
