Sgt. Christopher Richard Hrbek, 25, of Westwood, New Jersey, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on January 14, 2010.

Their Story

Christopher Richard Hrbek was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was a native of Westwood, New Jersey, and was 25 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On January 14, 2010, Sgt. Hrbek was killed by hostile action in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Defense Department, he died while supporting combat operations. No further specifics about the incident were publicly released by the Marine Corps.

Hrbek's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Helmand. In late 2009 and early 2010, U.S. and allied forces launched major operations, including Operation Moshtarak, to clear Taliban strongholds in the province. The 2nd Marine Division was heavily engaged in this effort, which resulted in some of the highest casualty rates of the war for U.S. forces.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local New Jersey media. He was survived by his parents and siblings. A funeral service was held in his hometown.

Sgt. Hrbek's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Westwood. He is also memorialized on online casualty databases and veteran remembrance sites maintained by the U.S. government and private organizations.
