U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Christopher Thomas Howick, 34, of Hamburg, New York, was killed in action on May 5, 2006, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Christopher Thomas Howick was a 34-year-old Staff Sergeant from Hamburg, New York, serving with Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, General Support Aviation Brigade, 10th Aviation Regiment, based at Fort Drum. His unit, part of Task Force Centaur, had deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On May 5, 2006, Howick was killed during combat operations in Kunar Province, a mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan along the border with Pakistan. According to the Department of Defense, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire during the operation.
By 2006, Operation Enduring Freedom was in its fifth year. The Taliban had regrouped and intensified its insurgency, particularly in the volatile eastern provinces. U.S. and coalition casualty figures were rising, with improvised explosive devices and direct fire engagements becoming more frequent.
Howick's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local media in western New York. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held in his hometown.
He is remembered on the 10th Aviation Regiment memorial at Fort Drum and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Hamburg Fairgrounds in New York. His name appears on Panel 6E, Row 102 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in the 2001 attack and subsequent wars.
