Lance Corporal Abram Larue Howard, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on July 27, 2010.
Their Story
Abram Larue Howard was born on October 18, 1988, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 4th Force Service Support Group, based in North Versailles, Pennsylvania. According to Marine Corps records, his unit was the I&I STF, MP Co. B(-), part of Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward.
On July 27, 2010, Lance Corporal Howard was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. The Marine Corps listed the cause of death as hostile action. Official reports indicate he died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on provinces like Helmand, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production. The summer of 2010 saw some of the highest casualty rates for international forces.
Howard's death was reported by the Department of Defense and local Pennsylvania media. He was survived by his parents and siblings. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Williamsport.
Lance Corporal Howard was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorial walls in Pennsylvania and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
