U.S. Army Corporal Jason Dane Hovater, 24, of Clinton, Tennessee, died on July 13, 2008, at Forward Operating Base Fenty in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jason Dane Hovater was a 24-year-old soldier from Clinton, Tennessee. He served as a Corporal with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was based at Camp Ederle in Vicenza, Italy. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On July 13, 2008, Hovater was killed by enemy fire at Forward Operating Base Fenty, a major coalition base near Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province. The base was a frequent target of insurgent rocket and mortar attacks. According to military reports, the attack that killed Hovater was a direct result of hostile action.

Hovater's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan. The U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom, launched in October 2001, saw a significant escalation of combat in 2008, particularly in eastern provinces like Nangarhar along the border with Pakistan. Insurgent forces regularly targeted coalition bases with indirect fire.

Hovater was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the attack on FOB Fenty that day. The other was Specialist Matthew L. Severson, 21, of Fairbanks, Alaska. The Department of Defense announced their deaths on July 15, 2008. Both soldiers were assigned to the same battalion.

Corporal Hovater was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. He is memorialized on the 173rd Airborne Brigade's 'Sky Soldiers' monument in Italy and at the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Clinton, Tennessee, courthouse. His name is inscribed on Panel 52W, Line 28 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
