Their Story

Jay Michael Hoskins was a 24-year-old sergeant from Paris, Texas, serving with the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, which was part of Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward), based out of Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

On August 6, 2009, Sgt. Hoskins was killed by hostile fire in Afghanistan's western Farah province. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died while supporting combat operations. No further specifics regarding the engagement were publicly released.

Hoskins died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as international forces attempted to counter a resurgent Taliban insurgency, particularly in southern and western provinces like Farah.

His body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Paris, Texas, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow Marines. The local newspaper, The Paris News, covered the service and his burial at Evergreen Cemetery.

Sgt. Hoskins is memorialized on the Fallen Heroes Memorial website and other veterans' remembrance pages. His name is listed on the Texas Capitol's memorial for veterans of the Global War on Terror.
