Sgt. Chester Wayne Hosford, 35, of Hastings, Minnesota, was a U.S. Army National Guard soldier who died on July 6, 2009, in Khanabad, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Chester Wayne Hosford was a 35-year-old sergeant from Hastings, Minnesota, serving with Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry Regiment, an Illinois Army National Guard unit based in Dixon. According to the Department of Defense, his military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment to Afghanistan.
On July 6, 2009, Sgt. Hosford was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Khanabad district of Afghanistan's Kunduz province. The patrol was part of a security operation in the region.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2009, the conflict had intensified, with a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and combat operations in northern provinces like Kunduz.
The Department of Defense announced his death on July 8, 2009. Local news reports from Minnesota noted his death and that he was survived by his wife and children. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
