Staff Sergeant Michael Wesley Hosey was a 27-year-old soldier from Birmingham, Alabama. He served as an active-duty member of the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
On September 17, 2011, Hosey was killed at Forward Operating Base Ripley in the Tarin Kowt district of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. No further specific details regarding the attack were publicly released.
Hosey's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission's stated objectives included dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power.
