Their Story

Patricia Lee Horne was a 20-year-old soldier from Greenwood, Mississippi. She served as a Specialist with the Headquarters and Support Company, 96th Aviation Support Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Her unit was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Horne died on August 24, 2012, at Bagram Airfield in Parwan Province, Afghanistan. The official release stated she was killed by enemy small arms fire while on guard duty. No other details of the incident were publicly disclosed.

Horne's death occurred during the later years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was characterized by insurgent attacks on coalition bases and personnel, even within heavily fortified installations like Bagram.

The Department of Defense announced Horne's death on August 25, 2012. Her body was returned to the United States. She was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals.

Patricia Horne is memorialized on the Mississippi Fallen Soldiers Memorial in Jackson. Her name is also inscribed on Panel 6W, Line 128 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
