Sgt. 1st Class Bryan Alan Hoover, 29, of West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in a hostile incident at Forward Operating Base Bullard, Afghanistan, on June 11, 2010.

Their Story

Sgt. 1st Class Bryan Alan Hoover was a 29-year-old soldier from West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. He served with the 28th Military Police Company, part of the 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The unit had been deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On June 11, 2010, Hoover was killed at Forward Operating Base Bullard in the Zabul province of southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, the base came under indirect fire, a term for mortar or rocket attacks. He was one of two American soldiers killed in the attack that day.

Hoover's death occurred during a period of intense fighting following a major U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan. The Taliban insurgency remained potent, particularly in the country's south and east, where they frequently employed indirect fire and improvised explosive devices against coalition forces and bases.

The Department of Defense officially announced his death on June 13, 2010. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His body was returned to Pennsylvania, where he was buried with military honors.

Sgt. 1st Class Hoover is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pennsylvania Military Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the 28th Infantry Division's memorial for fallen soldiers from Pennsylvania.
