Their Story
Christopher Steven Honaker was a 23-year-old soldier from Havelock, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based in Vicenza, Italy.
On July 5, 2007, Honaker was killed during combat operations in the Watapor Valley of Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his unit was engaged by enemy forces using small arms fire.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern provinces along the border with Pakistan.
Honaker's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors. A memorial service was held in his hometown.
He is remembered on memorials in North Carolina and at the 173rd Airborne Brigade headquarters in Italy. His name is inscribed on Panel 21E, Line 96 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
