Their Story
Tyler Nicholas Holtz was a 22-year-old sergeant from Dana Point, California. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On September 24, 2011, Sergeant Holtz died in Sayed Abad District, Wardak province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. A subsequent report from the Associated Press, citing military officials, stated he was killed by small arms fire during a patrol.
Holtz's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the conflict was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Wardak, where Sayed Abad is located.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Holtz the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his parents and a sister. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Dana Point.
Sergeant Holtz is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Orange County Veterans Memorial in California. His name is also inscribed on Panel 2W, Line 127 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
