Miguel Lorenzo Holmes was a 22-year-old soldier from Hinesville, Georgia. He served as a Specialist in Battery C, 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the Georgia Army National Guard's 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Savannah.
Holmes died on May 6, 2019, at Camp Dwyer, a forward operating base in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. According to a U.S. military statement, he was killed by small arms fire while engaged in a combat operation. The incident was reported as part of a larger engagement in the region.
His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in Afghanistan in January 2015. The operation focused on counterterrorism and training Afghan security forces, with U.S. and coalition troops continuing to face combat in provinces like Helmand.
The Department of Defense announced Holmes's death on May 8, 2019. His body was returned to the United States, and he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His unit and community in Georgia held memorial services.
